Arcane Cavalier

Sometimes wizards and sorcerers forge mystical bonds with their mounts, usually the result of casting beneficial spells on their mount (Spider Climb, Haste, Bull’s Strength, etc). This bond results in the mount gaining special magical abilities and the rider achieving a state of oneness with their chosen mount. The Arcane Cavalier also practices/hones his combat skills when riding.

    Requirements

  • To qualify to become an Arcane Cavalier a character must fulfill the following criteria.
  • Concentration: 8 ranks.
  • Knowledge (Arcana): 8 ranks.
  • Handle Animal: 4 ranks.
  • Ride: 4 ranks.
  • Feats: Mounted Combat, Combat Casting.
  • Spells: Ability to cast 3rd level arcane spells.
  • Special: Must have previously cast at least 3 beneficial spells on the mount and the mount must be with the rider for at least 3 months.

    Class Skills

  • The Arcane Cavalier’s class skills are: Concentration, Craft, Handle Animal, Knowledge, Profession, Ride, Spellcraft.
  • Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.

    Class Features

  • Weapon and Armour proficiency: Arcane Cavaliers gain no additional proficiency in any weapon or armour.
  • Base Attack Bonus: As per Wizard/Sorcerer, effective levels stack.
  • Base Saves: As per Wizard/Sorcerer, effective levels stack.
  • Spells per Day: When a new Arcane Cavalier level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding a prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained except for an increased effective level of spellcasting.

  • Special Mount: The Arcane Cavalier’s mount gains all the special benefits of being a paladin’s mount, but uses the character’s overall level to determine the mount’s special abilities. The mount’s alignment becomes that of the Arcane Cavalier.

  • Mounted Caster: The Arcane Cavalier has achieved an arcane oneness with his mount. He can cast spells while his mount is moving without having to make a concentration check. The caster must still make a concentration check if trying to cast defensively in combat.

  • Cavalier Feat: The Arcane Cavalier gains a rider feat (Trample, Ride-By Attack, Mounted Archery or Spirited Charge).

  • Arcane Horselord: The Arcane Cavalier becomes a master of men as well as his mount. He gains followers as if he possessed the feat “Leadership”. If the Arcane Cavalier already possesses the Leadership feat add a +2 bonus to the character’s effective Leadership score.
